Parents are increasingly naming their babies after Keanu Reeves.
The name of the beloved “Matrix” and “Bill and Ted” actor is seeing a notable surge in popularity among babies born last year, according to the Social Security Administration ’s annual report. The moniker rose 177 spots to rank 630th — no doubt a side effect of the flourishing “Keanussance” of the past several years. The trend is also supported by the existence of a #BabyKeanu hashtag on Instagram.
Among the other celeb names popping up lately: Archie rose in popularity by 316 spots to No. 672, thanks to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry ’s royal son, who was born in May of 2019. The Kardashians served as popular inspirations as well. Reign, the name of Kourtney and Scott Disick ’s son, ranked 185 spots higher for boys, at No. 769. Saint, the name of Kim and Kanye West ’s son, jumped 123 spots to No. 735.
“Game of Thrones” fans are still naming their spawns after Khaleesi, although the name decreased in popularity by 34 spots — blame it on that disastrous final season). However, the name Maisie is on the rise (up 148 spots), potentially after the show ’s actress Maisie Williams.
Internet culture definitely had an effect on one name slowly falling in the rankings: Chad, a name which has lately been co-opted by “incel” culture, is on the downswing for boys, dropping 229 spots. The same effect could probably be expected for Karen next year, although the name only dropped 23 spots from 2018 to 2019.
Then there ’s the mainstream successes. Among the most popular names of the year, Olivia leads the pack for girls, topping Emma (now No. 2), which has reigned for five years. She ’s followed by Ava, Sophia and Isabella. Liam tops the boys list for the third year in a row. Runners-up include Noah, Oliver, William and Elijah, respectively.
Some truly unique names are also popping up on birth certificates around the country — looking at you, baby Seven. Girls names Amoura, Theodora and Navy have the highest increases from 2018 to 2019. Sekani, Ermias and Amias take that lead on the boys side. Other creative names rising in popularity include Kyro for boys, and Blessing and Oakleigh for girls.
